The Poet of Ignorance
Etymology switcheroo

Perhaps the earth is floating,
I do not know.
Perhaps the stars are little paper cutups
made by some giant scissors,
I do not know.
Perhaps the moon is a frozen tear,
I do not know.
Perhaps God is only a deep voice,
heard by the deaf,
I do not know.

Perhaps I am no one.
True, I have a body
and I cannot escape from it.
I would like to fly out of my head,
but that is out of the question.
It is written on the tablet of destiny
that I am stuck here in this human form.
That being the case
I would like to call attention to my problem.

There is an animal inside me,
clutching fast to my heart,
a huge crab.
The doctors of Boston
have thrown up their hands.
They have tried scalpels,
needles, poison gases and the like.
The crab remains.
It is a great weight.
I try to forget it, go about my business,
cook the broccoli, open and shut books,
brush my teeth and tie my shoes.
I have tried prayer
but as I pray the crab grips harder
and the pain enlarges.

I had a dream once,
perhaps it was a dream,
that the crab was my ignorance of God.
But who am I to believe in dreams?

Anne Sexton’un “The Poet of Ignorance” şiiri, varoluşsal bir çaresizlik duygusunu, içsel çatışmayı ve özgürlük arayışını ironik bir dille anlatır. Şiirin ana temaları şunlardır:

  • Kendini Tanıma ve Kimlik Krizi: Şair, “Perhaps I am no one” (Belki de kimsem değil) ifadesiyle kendi varoluşunu sorgular. Kendi bedenine sıkışıp kalmış bir insan olarak, özgürlüğü arar fakat bu çaba “out of the question” (mümkün değil) olur.
  • İçsel Yük ve Kabus: “There is an animal inside me” (Benim içinde bir hayvan var) metaforu, şairin içindeki “kabus”u ve bu kabusun bir “crab” (kabuklu) olarak betimlenmesiyle, içsel sıkıntının somut bir temsilidir. Kabuklu hayvanın “grips harder” (daha sıkı tutar) olması, şairin korkusu ve acısının artışını gösterir.
  • İnanç ve Umut Çatışması: Şiirin sonunda “the crab was my ignorance of God” (kabuklu hayvan Tanrı’nın bilgisizliğimi temsil ediyordu) sözü, şairin Tanrı’ya olan inancını ve bu inançla ilgili belirsizliği ortaya koyar. Aynı zamanda “But who am I to believe in dreams?” (Peki rüyalara kim inanır?) sorusu, şairin kendine olan güvenini sarsar.
  • İroni ve Betimleme: Şair, gökyüzü, yer, Tanrı gibi büyük konuları “I do not know” (Bilmiyorum) ifadesiyle ironik bir dille ele alır. Bu, şiirin genel tonunu hafifçe karanlık ve absürt kılar.

Şiirin dilsel özellikleri:

  • Kısa ve Tekrar Eden Yapı: “Perhaps … I do not know” tekrarı, şairin belirsizliğini vurgular.
  • Betimleyici Görseller: “the stars are little paper cutups” (yıldızlar küçük kağıt kesikleri), “the moon is a frozen tear” (ay donmuş bir gözyaşı) gibi görsel metaforlar, şiirin soyut düşüncelerini somutlaştırır.
  • İçsel Diyalog: Şair, kendi içindeki kabuklu hayvanla diyalog kurar; bu, içsel çatışmanın bir yansımasıdır.

Sonuç olarak, “The Poet of Ignorance” Anne Sexton’un kendi varoluşu ve inançlarıyla ilgili derin bir içsel monologdur. Şair, kendini tanıma çabası içinde kabuklu bir hayvanla mücadele ederken, Tanrı ve bilinmezlik arasındaki uçurumu ironiyle gözler.
