by jumping with clouds
not scared from lightings around
happy on the white
some strange mist on eyebraws
-they are not tears
chill from the height-
down the ground there are cherry trees
It's like a sheet -pink colored-
on the all ugly that covered
when the masks changing faces
smiles are hand by hand
and music is louder
design is wonderful
hopes are reached to peek
-then-
the child has begun whispering
poor one will never know
whispers are not the answers
they've never been questions
yet
Title & Author
- Title: Marathon Of Minds
- Poet: İsmail ONAT
Overall Impression
The poem reads like a collage of sensory images and fleeting thoughts, evoking both lightness (clouds, music) and a subtle undercurrent of melancholy (mist on the eyebrows, “poor one will never know”). The structure is free‑form, lacking strict meter or rhyme, which mirrors the “marathon” of wandering consciousness that the title suggests.
Imagery & Symbolism
- Clouds & lightning: The juxtaposition of “jumping with clouds” and being unafraid of lightning implies a fearless exploration of the unknown.
- Cherry trees & pink sheet: These natural motifs evoke fleeting beauty and fragility, perhaps hinting at transient moments of joy.
- Mist on eyebrows: A metaphor for confusion or hidden emotions, yet clarified by the line “they are not tears.”
- Masks changing faces: Suggests identity fluidity, or the way people present different selves in social contexts.
Theme & Mood
The poem oscillates between optimism (“happy on the white,” “music is louder”) and introspection (“poor one will never know”). It portrays an internal journey where external stimuli (music, nature) catalyze self‑reflection. The “marathon” metaphor underscores persistence in seeking meaning.
Form & Language
- The free verse allows the poet to move quickly between images, reinforcing the “marathon” concept.
- Inconsistent capitalization and punctuation create a raw, almost stream‑of‑consciousness feel.
- The occasional use of hyphens (“-they are not tears”) signals abrupt shifts or interruptions in thought.
Possible Interpretations
- The poem could be a meditation on how we navigate life’s unpredictable moments—like clouds and lightning—while holding onto fleeting joys (cherry trees, music).
- It might also critique the superficiality of social masks and the difficulty in finding authentic answers to life’s questions.
Closing Thought
İsmail ONAT invites readers to run through a landscape of emotions and images, encouraging an acceptance that answers may never fully arrive—yet the journey itself is what gives meaning.
